US Open Round 1 Recap: Djokovic on course for record-breaking 21st Grand Slam

The 2021 US Open tournament has commenced with a lot of big names missing out on the tournament due to injuries here and there.

All four of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Venus Williams have pulled out of the tournament due to injury problems as they all miss out on the main draw of a grand slam for the first time since 1997.

Men’s world number one Novak Djokovic is pursuing a record-breaking 21st grand slam title that would take him beyond Federer and Nadal, both of whom have 20 titles apiece.

The first round of the tournament has been concluded, and here is a round-up of the results from the first round;

In the men’s side of the draw, Djokovic overcame a defiant Holger Rune 6-1 6-7 6-2 6-1 to progress to the second round. World number three Stefanos Tsitsipas came from a set down to defeat Andy Murray 2-6 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-4.

America’s Maxime Cressy pulled off the upset of the round as he defeated ninth seed Pablo Carreño Busta 5-7 4-6  6-1 6-4 7-6.

World number two Daniil Medvedev defeated Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-4 6-3 6-1 to progress to the second round.

World number four and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Alexander Zverev defeated Sam Querrey in straight sets 6-4 7-5 6-2 to qualify for the second round. Robert Bautista Agut defeated Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in straight sets 6-3 6-4 6-0.

Unseeded German Oscar Otte defeated 20th seed Lorenzo Sonego 6-7 7-5 7-6 7-6 in a shocking first round result. Vasek Pospisil defeated Fabio Fognini from two sets down 2-6 3-6 6-1 6-3 7-6 to advance to the second round.

Teenage Italian 13th seed Jannik Sinner defeated Max Purcell 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2. World number six Matteo Berrettini defeated Jeremy Chardy 7-6 7-6 6-3 in straight sets to progress. South Africa’s Lloyd Harris defeated Karen Khachanov 6-4 1-6 4-6 6-3 6-2.

Hubert Hurkacz defeated Egor Gerasimov in straight sets 6-3 6-4 6-3. Unseeded Carlos Alcaraz Garfia defeated 26th seed Cameron Norrie 6-4 6-4 6-3 in straight sets.

In the women’s side of the draw, world number one Ashleigh Barty defeated Vera Zvonareva in straight sets 6-1 7-6. Naomi Osaka, playing in her first Grand Slam since the French Open, also defeated Marie Bouzkova 6-4 6-1 in straight sets to progress to the second round.

Teenage sensation Coco Gauff booked her place in the second round courtesy of a hard-fought 5-7 6-3 6-4 win over Magda Linette.

Garbine Muguruza defeated Donna Vekic 7-6 7-6 to progress to the second round. Unseeded Sara Sorribes Tormo defeated 22nd seed Karolina Muchova 6-2 7-6 in an upset. Iga Swiatek defeated Jamie Loeb 6-3 6-4 to qualify for the second round.

World number six Bianca Andreescu defeated Viktoria Golubic 7-5 4-6 7-5, and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Belinda Bencic defeated Arantxa Rus 6-4 6-4.

Fourth seed Karolina Pliskova defeated Caty McNelly 6-3 6-4 to qualify. Petra Kvitova defeated Polona Hercog 6-1 6-2.

Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur defeated Alize Cornet 7-5 7-5 to progress. Simona Halep defeated Camila Giorgi in straight sets 6-4 7-6 to qualify for the second round.

Estonian Annett Kontaveit defeated Samantha Stosur in straight sets 6-3 6-0 to progress to the second round.
