Top five Super Eagles players from mid-week European Competitions

A host of Super Eagles players were in action for their clubs as European club football in the top tiers were staged across Europe.

On Tuesday and Wednesday it was the UEFA Champions League while on Thursday it was the UEFA Europa League.

Dennis Emmanuel and Zaidu Sanusi were the only Super Eagles players in action in the biggest European competition, UEFA Champions League; while the likes of Chidera Ejuke, Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Osimhen, Joe Aribo, and Kayode Olanrewaju played in the Europa league.

5. Sanusi Zaidu (Porto)

The Super Eagles left back was involved as the Portuguese club were beaten by Manchester City.

After impressing in the Portuguese Classico during the weekend, Sanusi was handed a starting berth as the left wing back in Porto’s 3-5-2 formation against Pep’s City.

It looked they were going to get a shocking result after scoring the first goal of the game but City responded from the spot kick and scored two more goals to run away with a 3-1 win on Tuesday.

4. Leon Balogun (Rangers)

Leon Balogun was in action for the entire duration for red-hot Rangers as they continued their good form with a 2-0 win against Standard Leige at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne on Thursday.

3. Kayode Olanrewaju (Sivasspor)

Former Manchester City striker Kayode Olanrewaju scored his first goal of the season in Sivasspor’s 5-3 loss to Samuel Chukwueze’s Villarreal on Thursday.

Olanrewaju was on the pitch for 81st minute before he was subbed of in the eight-goal thriller. The former Shakhtar Donetsk striker reduced the deficit to one with his 33rd minutes strike.

But  Samuel Chukweuze and his teammates ensured the took care of business by scoring more goals and securing a 5-3 win at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

2. Dennis Emmanuel (Club Brugge)

In one of the early kickoffs, Super Eagles forward Emmanuel Dennis got off the mark, scoring the first goal as his Belgian team Club Brugge stunned Russian league leaders Zenit Saint Petersburg 2-1 away from home.

Just as he did last season scoring a brace against Real Madrid, Dennis continue to make his mark in Europe with the Belgian champions.

1. Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City)

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Ihenacho was simply unplayable against Zorya at the Kings Power Stadium on Thursday.

Iheanacho became the first Nigerian to record two assists in an UEFA Europa League game when he assisted two goals in the 3-20 win.

The former Manchester City star assisted James Maddison and Harvey Barnes goals before capping up his great display with a goal of his own.

Notable mentions are Chidera Ejuke, Samuel Chukwueze, and Joe Aribo who were all involved for their clubs on Thursday too.
