Nigerian Footballers Abroad: Top ten performers of the week

It was a great weekend for the Nigerian Footballers plying their trades outside the shores of Nigeria.

Apart from John Obi Mikel, Semi Ajayi and Odion Ighalo who didn’t enjoy a great sporting weekend, it was generally a productive Saturday and Sundays for Nigerian players abroad.

There were moments to share for the likes of Paul Onuachu, Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Wilfred Ndidi, Ebere Eze and Noni Madueke.

10. John Obi Mikel (Stoke City)

The former Super Eagles captain was unlucky to be part of the Stoke City set up that was demolished at the home against Millwall.

John Obi Mikel was constant help when needed for the Porters but was unable to prevent his side from going down 2-0 on Sunday despite playing all 90 minutes of the game.

9. Odion Ighalo (Manchester United)

Odion Ighalo was surprisngly called upon by manager Ole Solskjaer in Manchester United’s 3-1 home loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

It was the first time in many months that the Nigerian was called upon and had little to do in his 9 minutes cameo appearance as Cyrstal Palace battered Manchester United at Old Trafford.

8. Semi Ajayi (West Brom)

West Brom Premier League return not going smoothly as of now and Semi Ajayi obviously not enjoying it so far.

The Super Eagles defender has been part of the team who has conceded a total of eight goals in just two Premier League games.

Ajayi was in action all through the game in West Brom 3-0 home loss to Leicester City in their first game, he was also in action on Saturday when they went down 5-2 to Everton at the Goodison Park.

7. Alex Iwobi (Everton)

Alex Iwobi was in action for Everton as they trashed West Brom on Saturday. Iwobi who missed Everton’s first game of the season due to injury started this game from the bench.

He was introduced in the second half as Everton ran away with a 5-2 win against West Brom on Saturday.

6. Ebere Eze (Crystal Palace)

Ebere Eze played part as Crystal Palace trashed Manchester United at the Old Trafford on Saturday. The Nigerian-born attacker continued to impress at his new club.

5. Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City)

Play him in the midfield or the central defence, Wilfred Ndidi will give you an ‘a performance’. Wilfred Ndidi again continued in his new role as a central defender and yet dropped a masterclass.

The Super Eagles midfielder has been playing as a central defender since the start of Premier League as cover for Leicester City first choice defender Jonny Evans.

But the Nigerian has been one of the club’s top performer despite playing as a a make shift defender. He was so good in Leicester City’s 4-2 win against Burnley on Sunday that his manager singled him out for praise.

4. Noni Madueke (PSV)

Fast rising Nigerian-born Noni Madueke continued his rise in the Netherlands. The 18-year-old Nigeria eligible was on target as PSV pipped FC Emmen on Saturday.

In just two games, he has assisted two goals and scored a goal for the Dutch side.

3. Victor Osimhen (Napoli)

All eyes were on Africa’s most expensive footballer and duly delivered on Sunday.

Victor Osimhen started in Napoli’s league opener from the bench and gave a top class performance within the 29 minutes he spent on the field.

He touched the ball 10 times, made 2 shots, completed all five of his passes, created four chances for his teammates.

The 2019/20 Nantes player of the season started the comeback draw for his side as they continue to find balance this new season.

1. Paul Onuachu (Genk)

Paul Onuachu was the top performer of the week in review. The lanky Eagles striker was on target twice as Genk came from a goal down to beat KV Mechelen on Sunday.

The 26-year-old striker scored the Genk’s first and third goal of the game to completed a 3-1 win at the Luminus Arena.

He has now scored a total of four goals in five league games for Genk this new season.
